Brief History of the University of Benin (UNIBEN)

The popular University of Benin was formerly known as the Institute of Technology. The school started in 1970 in Bendel State, as it was called then in Nigeria. The school was founded due to the burning need for a university in the Midwest at that time. Therefore, with this pressing need, the Institute of Technology was established in May 1970.

Similarly, the site where the school was built was the former Teacher Training College in Benin City (Mariere College). Thus, this became the temporary position of the institute. On July 1st, 1971, the Institute of Technology was fully accredited by the National University Commission (NUC). Following this, in April 1972, the then Military Governor of the Mid-Western State (Col. S.O. Ogbemudia) in his budget speech announced the name change of the Institute to the University of Benin.

Furthermore, as the school continue to evolve, several faculties and colleges were developed. Likewise, the optometry program was developed in 1972 under the Faculty of Sciences, headed by Dr. Paul Ogbuchi. This program had professionals from top Western countries who handled the course at the school. Today, Uniben has 11 Faculties and 3 Colleges, ranging from different study programs. Admission Processing Guide for the University of Benin

Firstly, to be eligible for admission into the UNIBEN, candidates must be 16 years or above. This is with regard to the educational policy in Nigeria for higher education Learning. Similarly, the students are also expected to ensure that they have sat for their O-level exams. They must also ensure that they scored a pass in at least five subjects in their relevant field of study in not more than two sittings. Normally, the O-level exams used in the country can either be WAEC or NECO.

For Science and Engineering Aspirants: Prospective students of UNIBEN intending to undertake any of the related fields in the university, are expected to have a minimum score of a pass in the WAEC/NECO grading system in not more than two sittings in the following subjects:

English, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology.

After this is achieved, the students are to sit for the JAMB UTME exam and are expected to score a minimum of 200 on the JAMB grading system.   2. Fill Personal Details

  3. Upload Documents


    When you’ve successfully logged in, look to the left panel of your dashboard and do the following;
    Click on the button there to fill out the application form. Ensure you correctly fill in your details.
    When you are sure you are done filling out the form, click on the save button provided therein.
    Then, upload your passport photograph for identification according to the required format (JPG/PNG) and size.
    Hence, select your screening center and date.
    Note: You will obtain an application ID on the portal. You will be required to take it to the bank to make a payment for your application form. Students can go to the following banks to make payments. WEMA, Diamond, First Bank, GTB, or UBA bank to pay an application fee of 2,000 Naira only. When at the bank, tell the teller that you want to pay for the University of Benin application fee. They will charge you a service fee of #350. Summing up to 2,350 Naira as the application fee.

  •  Firstly, log in to your UNIBEN student profile with the username and password generated during admission screening registration (See Admission Screening Process above)
  • Then, click the menu button, click on My Data, and select the Payment option.
  • Next, click on the add online payment ticket button
  • Select what you want to pay for, which is school fees. However, if you want to pay for the acceptance fee, click on the acceptance fee option
  • Click the create ticket button to generate your online invoice with your Remitta number
  • Now, a page will appear, you can either click pay via Remitta (Using your Bank Card) or print your invoice to proceed to the bank for payment.
  • To pay at the bank, you can proceed to any commercial bank in Nigeria with your printed invoice slip.
  • After the payment, return to your portal to print the receipt or acceptance slip and continue your admission registration.
  • Alternatively, you can make a payment using your bank card by providing the details on your card on the Interswitch payment gateway.
  • After that, an acceptance fee will automatically appear on the screen.

Cost of Living

The cost of living and studying in UNIBEN is considerably low, owing to the amount paid by the hostel occupants of the school.
