Brief History of Obafemi Awolowo University

As earlier said, OAU Ife was founded in 1961 as a result of the need to extend education to tertiary/higher level which was seen as a key factor for societal development. So, in 1960, the government saw the need for an even educational institution development. As a result, a committee which comprises of the a Cambridge lecturer Eric Ashby, a labor economist Frederick H. Harbison and some others, was set up to investigate the most suitable place to establish an institution in the Western region.

By the time the commission submitted a final report, the Federal Government started to construct structures for the new institution (OAU Ife). The institution commenced its academic session on 22 September 1962 with 224 students. Today, the population of students in the institution has risen to over 35,000.

Meanwhile, the institution was first named University of Ife at inception. Later, in 12 May 1987, the name was changed to Obafemi Awolowo University. This was done in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo who was the first Premier of the Western region of Nigeria and died in 1987. So, the institution was officially made a federal University by the decrees carried out by the military government in 1975.

Location of Obafemi Awolowo University

Currently, the institution is located on the center of Western Nigerian Civilization, Ile-Ife in Osun State, Nigeria. It sits at the latitude of 7°31′06″N and Longitude of 4°31′22″E. However, as at the time when the College of Art, Science and Technology in University of Ibadan was transferred to University of Ife (present Obafemi Awolowo University), the Institution was temporary Located in the Ibadan and later moved to its permanent site at Ile-Ife.

Generally, the affairs of the institution are overseen by an organizing body which comprises of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers. Hence, they ensure the smooth running of the university activities and a hitch free administration of the institution. So, below is a brief discussion on the organizing body of the institution.

#1. Chancellor

Normally, the chancellor of the institution is a traditional ruler as with most institutions. In the case of OAU, the current chancellor is Etsu Yahaya Abubakar.

#2. Vice-Chancellor

The office of the Vice-Chancellor is another critical and sensitive position in the institution. Below is the list of VCs of the school from its time of inception.

  • Prof. Oladele Ajose: Professor Oladele was the first professor of OAU Ife and assumed office in 1962 when the School started the first academic session. However, he left office in 1966 due to the effect of the military coup that took place same year.
  • Prof. H. A. Oluwasanmi: He came into office in 1966 and served till 1975.
  • Professor Ayobami Taofeek Salami: He was appointed in June 1975. However, he constituted a violence that lead to his immediate removal as the Vice-Chancellor by the Federal Government.
  • Prof. Anthony Adebolu Elujoba: He was immediately appointed as the acting Vice-Chancellor.
  • Prof. Ojetunji Aboyade: He served from 1975 to 1978.
  • Prof. Cyril Agodi Onwumechili: He served in office from 1979 till 1982.
  • Prof. Wande Abimbola: His tenure  started in 1982 and lasted till 1989.
  • Prof. C. Adeniyi Osuntogun: He served from 1990 till 1991.
  • Prof. Wale Omole: He assumed office in 1991 and left office in 1999.
  • Prof. Roger Makanjuola: He was in office from 1999 till 2006.
  • Prof. Micheal Oladimeji Faborede: He was active in office from 2006 till 2011.
  • Prof. Idowu Bamitale Omole: He assumed office in 2011 and occupied the sit till 2016.
  •  Prof.  Anthony Elujoba:  He served as as Acting Vice- Chancellor from 2016 till 2017        
  • Prof. Eyitope Ogungbenro Ogunbodede: Assumed office in 2017 and is still in office till present.

Faculties/Departments in Obafemi Awolowo University

Initially, when OAU commenced it academic session, there were five faculties namely: Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Art, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Economics and Social Science. Over the years, other faculties were established.

Meanwhile, a collegiate system was introduced into the University but was later rejected by the administration, leaving only the Postgraduate College and College of Health Science functional till date. Admission Requirements for Obafemi Awolowo University

Typically, it has always been the contemplation of students whether or not they could stand a chance to be admitted into the Obafemi Awolowo University since the institution is renowned. Interestingly, the OAU admission process is such that anyone can stand a chance to be selected as the admission is solely based on Merit.

Therefore, every qualified candidates can apply and will have the chances of being admitted without any bias. Meanwhile, candidates can stand such chance if they meets certain admission requirements:

Firstly, the candidate must obtain 5 credit passes including English and Mathematics from not more that 2 sittings of O-Level Exams, WAEC/NECO/GCE or from any equivalent examination. Likewise, candidates must ensure that the subjects taken in the examination (WAEC, NECO etc) is the correct subjects required to study the desired course in the University.

Furthermore, after meeting these requirements, candidates are to register and sit for JAMB. Meanwhile, it is necessary to ensure that the subject combination is suitable to grant you admission for the prospective course of study. Following this, candidates should apply for the OAU PUTME and write the exam. There are certain procedures to be undertaken by applicants as part of PUTME application. Firstly, the candidate is expected to log on to the institution admission portal. While on the portal the applicant is expected to perform the following action:

  • Update JAMB information
  • Upload scanned Certificates (WAEC/NECO/GCE etc) and other credentials in addition to the above
  • Likewise, a passport photograph is to be uploaded if not already available
  • Lastly, the candidate should download the completed admission screening form

How To Register for OAU Screening Exercise

Typically, OAU is an institution that most young people desire to study in, and this is because of the reputation the school has built over the years. Hence, if you want to enroll for the screening exercise in the Obafemi Awolowo University, below is a step-by-step procedure:

To successfully enter the screening process into the OAU IFE, candidates must follow the underlay guides:

  1. Visit Website

  2. Fill Personal Details

    Log in to the E-Portal using your email address as the username and the password sent to the email address you used for creating the login details.

  3. Upload Documents


    After you’ve logged in, look to the left panel of your dashboard and do the following;
    Click on the button there to fill out the application form. Ensure you correctly fill in your details.
    When you are sure you are done filling out the form, click on the save button provided therein.
    Then, upload your passport photograph for identification according to the required format (JPG/PNG) and size.
    Select your screening center and date.
    Note: You will obtain an application ID on the portal. You can take it to the bank to make a payment for your application form. Students can go to the following banks to make payments. WEMA, Diamond, First Bank, GTB, or UBA bank to pay an application fee of 2,000 Naira only. When at the bank, tell the teller that you want to pay for the Obafemi Awolowo University application fee. They will charge you a service fee of #350. Summing up to 2,350 Naira as the application fee.

  4. Payment Review

    After you’ve made the payment, log in to the application portal and submit. Kindly note that you cannot apply without making the bank payment.

  5. Print Form
