Brief History of the Federal University of Technology Akure

federal-university-of-technology-akure

FUTA was established in 1981, as a result of the rising need for an institution that specialized in technology. To achieve this, a commission was set up to investigate the feasibility of having an institution set up in the region. However, Akure was chosen for this task.

Meanwhile, there was a challenge that arose around that time; the site that was chosen for the establishment of the university was being occupied by a Federal Polytechnic since 1977. At first, there were some elements of resistance and agitation, presented by the officers of the Polytechnic, against this proclamation. This is because they had earlier been asked to move from Jos, Plateau State, where they initially occupied.

Nevertheless, a joint council restored understanding between the two institutions, and the Polytechnic voluntarily had to give way to the new University. Then, on 22 November 1982, the institution officially welcomed about 149 pioneer students in an orientation organized in the university still under construction.

A week later, academic activities started in the institution, and on 22 January of the following year, the institution held a matriculation ceremony for its pioneer students. Additionally, the institution started with three pioneer schools, namely: the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, the School of Earth and Mineral Science, and Pure and Applied Sciences. Later on, more schools were introduced into the system.

Location of FUTA

FUTA is located in Akure, in Ondo State, Nigeria, at a Latitude of 7.3043°N and a Longitude of 5.1370°E. Similarly, the geographical location of FUTA in the capital of the State gave it an advantage in terms of its development. The institution is situated in the State’s heart of commerce.

Organizing Body Of The Institution

The governing body of the institution is incorporated in the Senate, which is the highest decision-making body of the institution. The Senate is made up of the Chancellor, the Vice- Chancellor and other principal officers. At the time of inception, a council chamber was set up to ensure the smooth running of the academic affairs.

The first chamber meeting was held on 27th October, 1982, which was the last Wednesday of the month. Consequently, the chamber was fixed to always hold on the last Wednesday of every month, and has been maintained to date. Below are a few of the members of the governing body.

#1. Chancellor

Typically, the office of the Chancellor is occupied by a traditional leader or sometimes a head of state. The first chancellor of the institution was HRN Alhaji Zulkanaini Gambari Mohammed, who was the Emir of Ilorin. However, the present Emir of Lafia is the current chancellor of the institution.

#2. Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor usually serves as the Chairman of the governing council. The VC is saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the overall welfare of the university. The appointment of Late Prof. Theodore Idibiye Francis as the VC on 19th Nov. 1981, made him the pioneer vice-chancellor of the university. However, the list of the chancellors from the time of inception till date is given below:

  • Prof. Theodore Idibiye Francis: He was the pioneer VC of the institution and was in seat from 1981 to 1987.
  • Prof. Albert Adeoye Ilemobade: He succeeded Prof. Theodore and served from 1987 to 1995.

  • Prof. Peter Olufemi Adeniyi: He was the VC from 2002 to 2006.
  • Prof. Adebisi M. Balogun: Prof Adebisi was the VC of the institution from 2007 till 2012.
  • Prof. Emmanuel Adebayo Fashakin: Prof. Emmanuel Adebayo was the VC of FUTA from Feb. 2012 to May that same year.

However, some students still prefer to stay off campus due to personal preference. Nevertheless, there are advantages and some disadvantages of staying in the university hostels or staying off campus, and they include:

  • Normally, living in the university hostel can be safer in terms of security, unlike when the student lodges outside the school territory.
  • Also, when you stay off campus, the possibility of getting distracted and derailed from focusing on your academics is higher than staying within the university hostels.
  • Mostly, more cases of sexual harassment and murder of students living off campus have been recorded; this has some psychological consequences that slow down the victims’ performance in school.
  • Over the years, students staying off campus have fallen victim of different forms of attacks by cultists.

Meanwhile, these incidents do not imply that the hostel is the best place to stay, because there are some downsides to living in the University Hostels. Therefore, the choice for choosing a place of residence is relative to individuals; what a student loves, another may dislike.
