Brief History of the Federal College of Education Zaria

The Federal College of Education Zaria is owned and controlled by the Federal Government. Fondly, it is called FCEZARIA. In 1962, a legal law was established to foster the training of teachers, to continue with the chain of imparting knowledge to students. Similarly, the college came about as one of the suggestions by a British Commissioner, Ashby.

Before the eve of the year Nigeria gained her Freedom, there was a growing need to expand education. For this purpose, Ashby was appointed. Following this, he selected three regions for the location of the new advanced schools that were forthcoming. This include Lagos, Owerri, Zaria, and Ondo. Without further delay, the government approved his proposal which was titled “Investment in Education”.

Therefore, given birth to the Federal College of Education Zaria came into existence in 1962. Formerly, the school was named “Advanced Teacher’s College Zaria” which the Federal Government proposed. Then, it formally started academic session on 1st November 1962. This saw the enrollment of 152 pioneer students.

Furthermore, the school occupied a temporary site at the present Kaduna State Polytechnic (Annex Campus). Later on, the college moved to its permanent site in 1973. As time rolled by, structures were erected in the college. This aided in the expansion of the scope of the College of Education.

Affiliation of the Federal College of Education Zaria

The college is affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria under the institution of Education. As a result, the ABU influenced the college in ways beneficial to both institutions. In terms of structures, the Federal College of Education Zaria is well-fashioned and equipped.

Firstly, there are standard lecture rooms in the school. Hence, the atmosphere is very conducive for effective learning. Secondly, the school has world-class teaching personnel. Federal College of Education Zaria is located in Zaria, Kaduna State of Nigeria. Specifically, it is located opposite the Kongo Campus of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. #1. The Provost

The provost is regarded as the executive and academic head of the college. Typically, they are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the activities of the school are run in good state. Likewise, they make sure the financial aspect of the school’s affairs does not lag in any way. The current provost of the college is Dr. A.A. Ladan.

#2. Deputy Provost

The Deputy Provost must assist the Provost in running the school’s affairs. Also, in the absence of the Provost, the Deputy acts in his place. However, the deputy provost is always accountable to the Provost. The Present Deputy Provost of the college is Dr. Suleiman Barabe.

#3. Registrar

Normally, a registrar of any college is referred to as the record keeper. Thus, they act like the secretary of the school. Still, the decision of the Provost overrides that of the registrar.  The present registrar of the Federal College of Education is Dr. Jibrin Lawal.

#4. Librarian

Admission Guide of the Federal College of Education Zaria

The admission process of the Federal College of Education Zaria is quite simple and less strenuous. In other words, it doesn’t require much tedious process. However, it is very competitive. But if you keenly follow their guidelines, you’re good to go! Thus, below is a guideline for gaining admission into the institution.

First and foremost, any candidate who seeks admission into FCEZARIA must sit for the O’Level exam (or its equivalent). Thus, they are to obtain at least 5 credit passes, with subjects relevant to the prospective course of study. To ease your search, we have compiled the basic WAEC subject combination for each course present in the school. Therefore, visit WAEC to see them in detail.

Secondly, the candidate should register and sit for JAMB. It should be noted that this is very compulsory. In the process, the candidate must at least score up to the JAMB cut-off mark the college maps out. Currently, the JAMB cut-off mark chosen by the Federal College of Education Zaria is 100. Without a doubt, any candidate who scores up to this mark can apply for admission to the college. Finally, the candidate must partake in the PUTME organized by the school. Admittedly, any candidate who fails in this regard may not be offered admission.

Documents Required for Screening

Students should submit the following documents in the course of their screening:

  • The letter of offer of admission by JAMB or the College
  • Copy of the acceptance letter
  • A letter of identification from the student’s Local Government Area
  • A letter of good conduct from an Imam or Clergyman
  • Six recent passport-sized photographs
  • A medical report
  • Original copies of Certificates or statements of results
  • Original Birth Certificate/Declaration of Age

Special Admission Requirements

There are different criteria for students intending to enroll for each of the Degrees present in the institution. Some of these are:

#1. For Nigeria Certificate NIGERIA in Education (NCE)

The candidates are to apply on the JAMB Polytechnic and Colleges of Education Matriculation Form (MPCE). In addition, the candidates should take note of some other points. These include:

  • Of the 5 passes from O’Level or WAEC, four must be at credit level.
  • Alternatively, the candidates should have three merits or credits from Grade II Teachers Certificates/ Higher Islamic Studies (SISC). In the same vein, two of the subjects must be relevant to the intended course of study.
  • Furthermore, the candidate should obtain the City and Guild Intermediate Certificate. Meanwhile, an R.S.A. or the Federal Craft Training Certificate is allowed.
  • Obtain the Associate Certificate in Education awarded by an approved in Nigeria or abroad.
  • Likewise, a credit in English and mathematics may be demanded.
  • Also, Candidates who are successful in the Pre-NCE (Language or Science) final exam are eligible to apply.
  • Above all, the College may equally organize its screening test or interview. Courses like Physical and Health would be subject to this.

#2. NCE By Correspondence (NCE)

Generally, any candidates who seek to gain admission into NCE by Correspondence must have any of the following:

  • Obtain three credits/merits from Teachers’ Grade II (TC II). Meanwhile, one of the subjects must be the preferred course of study in College.
  • Acquire a certificate in GCE or SSCE. However, you should have at least 5 credits in not less than two sittings.
  • Have a minimum of five years post-qualification experience in teaching with a Grade II pass certificate.

#3. Pre-NCE Programme

The candidate who seeks admission into the Pre-NCE Programme must have any of the following:

  • Obtain O’Level certificates 4 credit passes in one sitting or 5 credits in two sittings. Note that, the subject must include English, Mathematics, and any other subjects relevant to the course.
  • Passes in TC II certificate
  • From other relevant qualifications, candidates should obtain 4 credits in one sitting or 5 credits in two sitting

#4. Remedial Programme

To gain admission into the Remedial Programme at Federal College of Education Zaria, candidates must have any of the following:

  • Two passes in SSCE or GCE.
  • At least two passes from TC II.
  • Obtain at least two passes from the Federal Craft Certificate or the City and Guilds Certificate.

#5. Part-Time Programme

In the Federal College of Education Zaria, there are two categories of Part-Time Programmes. They are: the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Certificate Courses.

Briefly, let’s look at the admission requirements for each of them:

  • The PGDE requires a minimum of first degree or HND.
  • Then, Certificate Courses require a minimum of a secondary school leaving certificate.

#6. Undergraduate Programme

To enroll in the undergraduate program, the candidate must meet up with the following criteria:

  • Obtain credit in the NCE certificate relevant courses. However, this must be relevant to the area of study.
  • In addition, the candidate should obtain credit in Mathematics to study Science Courses. Equally, a credit in English is required to study Art Courses.

For the Federal College of Education Zaria, all registrations are done online. For this reason, follow the process outlined below to make your registration a success.

To successfully enter the screening process intoFCE Zaria, students have to ensure they follow the underlay guides;

  1. Visit Website

    You will visit the FCE application portal and register yourself using your active email ID and telephone number. Thus, create your login details and obtain your password.

  2. Fill Personal Details


    After that, log in using your email address as the username and the sent password to the email address you used for creating login details.

  3. Upload Documents


    When you’ve successfully logged in, look to the left panel of your dashboard and do the following;
    Click on the button there to fill out the application form. Ensure you correctly fill in your details.
    When you are sure you are done filling out the form, click on the save button provided therein.
    Then, upload your passport photograph for identification according to the required format (JPG/PNG) and size.
    Hence select your screening center and date.
    Note: You will obtain an application ID on the portal. You will be required to take it to the bank to make payment for your application form. Students can either go to the following banks to make payments. WEMA, Diamond, First Bank, GTB, or UBA bank to pay an application fee of 2,000 Naira only. When at the bank just tell the teller that you want to pay for the Babcock application fee. They will charge you a service fee of #350. Summing up to 2,350 Naira as the application fee.

  4. Payment Review


    After you’ve made the payment, log back into the application portal and submit. Note that you cannot apply without making the bank payment.

  5. Print Form


    Now follow all the given instructions on the left menu and ensure you print out your application form. The application form will be required to be presented during the screening process.

How to Pay the FCEZARIA School Fees?

To pay your school fees at the Federal College of Education Zaria, please follow these steps:

  • Access the Student Portal: Visit the FCE Zaria official website here and navigate to the Student Portal.
  • Generate a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR): Log in to your student account using your credentials. Locate the section for fee payment and select the appropriate fee category.​ The system will generate a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) for you.​
  • Make the Payment: You can pay through various channels with the RRR, whether it’s bank payment or online payment. Hence, you can visit any commercial bank and present your RRR to make the payment. For online payment, use the Remita platform to pay with your debit/credit card or mobile wallet.
  • Confirm the Payment: After payment, return to the Student Portal to confirm and print your payment receipt.​

Cost of Living in the College

Normally, hostels are sited within the school for interested students to Lodge in. These hostels are very cheap, well-furnished, and have a good drainage pattern. Similarly, the management of the college has provided adequate social amenities for the residents of the hostel. Coming to the cost of living, the students would only have to pay the sum of #7,090. Note that, students would have to pay the school fee before applying for the hostel.
