Brief History of the Federal College of Education Kano
Initially, the Federal College of Education Kano was known as Kano Men Training College. FCE Kano started in 1961, this was one year after Nigeria gained independence. Then, the institution had its site at Gwale Senior Primary School in Kano. The School moved to its permanent site at Kofar in 1965.
Following that, FCE Kano was established to fill the demand for well-trained professionals to teach the youth. Thus, this was accomplished under the joint effort of the Ministry of Education of the then Northern Region. It was headed by the Late Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardauna of Sakkwato, and the United Agency for International Aid (USAID).
The school started with 34 students, admitting students who has finished high school and intend to qualify as grade two teachers. The first five years of the training program of the school started in January 1962 with 121 post-primary students. In January 1963, the name of the institution was changed from Kano Men Training College to Kano Teachers College
In 1965, the Nigeria Certification in Education (NCE) Programme was initiated in the College. With the introduction of the NCE Programme, the name of the College was changed to Advanced Teachers College. In 1990, the name of the school became the Federal College of Education, Kano. Now, the school is fully accredited by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Today, the FCE Kano has 6 schools that offer NCE degrees across different fields of study. They also offer different degree Programmes like; Bachelor of Education (B.Edu), Pre-NC, Continuing Education (Diploma, NCE/DE), and part-time Programmes in all the schools therein.
