Brief History of Adeyemi College of Education (ACEOndo)

Before the establishment of ACEOndo, various institutions existed. Some of them were the Fela Kuti College of Education, the Olunloye College of Education, and the Ohio Teachers Project, Teachers College, which existed up to 1963. Hence, these institutions and many more came together and birthed the present-day Adeyemi College of Education.

Furthermore, when the institution started academic activities on the 22nd of May  1964, it did so with a total of 93 pioneer students, made up of 69 men and 24 Women. The Academic activities kicked off with a few departments, including the Department of History and others.

At inception, the status of the institution was not tangible enough to award its degrees. Consequently, in 1981, the Federal Government took the bull by the horns by upgrading the College to a status that conferred on the institution the autonomous power to award its degree. Since then, it started to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Education history, under the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The introduction of Pre-NCE amounted to the expansion of the institution’s scope.

Years later, following the petitions made to the Federal Government to upgrade the College to a full university, the government under the presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. In 2015, the College of Education was upgraded to a complete University of Education. However, it was dissolved by the Federal Government under the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari on the basis that it was upgraded without any established Law. Nevertheless, a bill to make it a full-fledged university of Education has been passed, waiting for enactment.
