Brief History of the Abia State University

The present-day Abia State University was established in 1981 under the former Imo State. The university was founded to extend modern research facilities and expertise, which was seen as an important factor for technological advancement in the nation. Under the old Imo State, ABSU had its campuses in Etiti (where the main campus was located) and in Aba.

Subsequently, between 1984 and 1985, the university was moved to its permanent site in Uturu under the rule of the then military governor Gen. Ike Nwachukwu. The administration of the institution started off fully at that time and the institution recorded a higher rate of admission.

Eventually, when Abia State was created in 1991, the university at Uturu fell under the jurisdiction. Consequently, the campus at Uturu was ceded to the Abia State Government. Hence, the institution experienced a new dimension of administration. In addition to the main campus at Uturu, a new campus was created at Umuahia to contain the population of students because they started to experience a high inflow of students. Similarly, the Campus at Uturu has to house the Faculty of Law, Agriculture, and Veterinary Medicine.

Location of Abia State University

Abia State University is located in right in Uturu, Abia state in Nigeria. It sits at the latitude of 5.8308° N and a longitude of 7.4191° E. The geographical position of ABSU made it a beneficiary of nature’s free gift of serenity which prompts academic excellence.

The Governing Body of ABSU

Typically, the academic affairs and administration of ABSU are run by a council who ensures that the sole mission of the institution in promoting excellence is met. This council has it highest decision making body as the Senate. Furthermore, the Senate is made up of the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, and other principal officers. Below is a brief discussion of some Principal Officers of the institution:

#1. Chancellor

Just like most universities, the office of the chancellor of the Abia State University is bestowed on a traditional ruler, in the person of Professor James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse who is  Begha U Tiv, Orcivirigh. The chancellor, with wealth of experience, has a lot of contributions and impacts to make towards the advancements of the standard of the institution for a defined goal.

#2. Vice-chancellor

Generally, the vice chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university. He is the executive officer of the institution and, as a result, has the responsibility of ensuring unity that would enable a conducive atmosphere for high academic activities.

Currently, the VC of the university is Professor E. Uche Ikonne; who is a professor of Optometry. For reference purposes, the list of the vice chancellors of Abia State University from the time of its foundation till date is given below.

  • Professor M.J.C Echeruo: He was the first VC of ABSU and was a prof. in English. He served from 1981 to 1988.
  • Late Professor G.M.Umezuruike: Late Prof. Umezuruike was a professor in Biochemistry. His terms lasted from 1988 to 1993.
  • Professor S.O.Igwe: He is a prof. of Education. He assumed office in 1993 and served till 1999.
  • Professor S.O. Emejuaiwe: He was a Professor of Biochemistry and served as the acting VC of Abia State University from 1999 to 2000.
  • Professor Ogwo E. Ogwo: He was a Professor of Marketing. He assumed office as the VC of AbSU in 2000 and served in capacity till 2005.
  • Professor E.C. Nwahunnanya: As Prof. of English, he served as an acting VC in 2005.
  • Professor Mkpa Agu Mkpa: He was a Professor of Education. He assumed office, by appointment, in 2005, and served in capacity till 2010.
  • Professor Chibuzo Ogbuagu: He was a Prof. of  Political Science, assumed office in 2010 and served till 2015
  • ProfessorE.UcheIkonne: He is a professor in Optometry. He assumed office in 2016.
  • Professor Ndukwe J. Okeudo: He assumed office in 2024 till date.

Abia State University Admission Guide

If you’ve been dreaming of obtaining admission into Abia State University, your dreams are achievable. You only need to take the right steps towards your pursuit of admission. Therefore, the processes involved in getting admission into ABSU are discussed below.

  • Firstly, the candidates would have to obtain 5 credit passes in SSCE/GCE/NECO/WAEC certificates (or the equivalent). Furthermore, the subjects taken in the examination must be relevant to guarantee admission into the required course of study and must not be certificates obtained in more than two sittings. However, SSCE subject requirements depend on the course the candidate intends to study in the university.
  • In addition, the candidates should obtain JAMB form, register, and sit for the JAMB examination in which they are expected to make ABSU the first choice of institution. It is important to take note of the UTME (JAMB) subject combinations for each course. Failure to get this correctly can cost them admission as candidates with the wrong JAMB subject combination may not be considered for admission into the university. Nevertheless, the candidates can visit the JAMB BROCHURE for a comprehensive list of the subject combinations for different programs.
  • Having registered and sat for JAMB examination, the candidate should proceed to the university portal to register for the PUTME.

How to Register for ABSU POSTUTME/Screening?

To successfully enter the screening process into Abia State University, students have to ensure they follow the underlay guides:

  2. Fill Personal Details

  3. Upload Documents


    When you’ve successfully logged in, look to the left panel of your dashboard and do the following;
    Click on the button there to fill out the application form. Ensure you correctly fill in your details.
    When you are sure you are done filling out the form, click on the save button provided therein.
    Then, upload your passport photograph for identification according to the required format (JPG/PNG) and size.
    Hence, select your screening center and date.
    Note: You will obtain an application ID on the portal. You will be required to take it to the bank to make a payment for your application form. Students can go to the following banks to make payments. WEMA, Diamond, First Bank, GTB, or UBA bank to pay an application fee of 2,000 Naira only. When at the bank, just tell the teller that you want to pay for the Abia State University application fee. They will charge you a service fee of #350. Summing up to 2,350 Naira as the application fee.

  4. Payment Review

  5. Print Form

How to Pay ABSU School Fees?

To make your tuition fee payment at ABSU, you can follow the procedure below:

  • Visit the school portal and login through the students portal using your Matriculation number or JAMB Registration Number (for fresh students)
  • When logged in, select the fees to pay and generate a receipt for the payment
  • Proceed to any of the Banks Provided above to make your payment
  • On successfully completing the payment, an Email containing the Fee Receipt will be sent to you. Keep this Email for future references.
