History of Lagos State University (LASU)

Lagos State University, fondly called LASU, is a state government-owned university. Established in 1983, the university was founded to promote advanced/tertiary education; which was considered necessary for societal development.

Furthermore, the university operates on a collegiate system and offers degrees in undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs. Some of these programs take a duration of 4, 5, or 6 years. Meanwhile, these programs are situated on different campuses.

In addition, apart from the main campus located at Ojo, there are other different campuses which are: the Epe Campus, Ikeja, and Surulere. The Epe campus houses the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Agriculture. The Ikeja campus houses the department of medicine. It is worth noting that the Epe campus is the biggest; even bigger than the main campus at Ojo. To promote effective administration, each campus is headed by the Head of School (HOS) who is responsible for ensuring hitch-free running of the activities on the campus.

Governing Body of LASU

Typically, the affairs of LASU are overseen by a governing body that conducts the organization and running of the institution. The highest decision-making body is the Senate. This is made up of the chancellor, vice chancellor, and other principal officers. Some of them are discussed below.

#1. The Chancellor

Generally, the chancellor of Nigerian universities is usually a traditional ruler, a religious leader, or a political leader. Likewise, in LASU, the Chancellor of the institution is George Adesola Oguntade, who is the High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom.

#2. Vice-Chancellor (VC)

The Vice-Chancellor is the ceremonial/executive head of the institution. The VC is responsible for ensuring that the university is in line with its mission to promote academic excellence. From the time of inception till date, the list of the Vice-Chancellors that have governed the institution is given below.

  • Prof. Folabi Olumide : He was the first/pioneer vice Chancellor of LASU and assumed office in 1983. However, he remained in office till 1988.
  • Prof. Mrs. Jadesola Akande: She was the first female VC of LASU and was in office from 1989 to 1993.
  • Prof. Enitan Bababunmi: He served as the VC from 1993 to 1996.
  • Prof. Fatiu Ademola Akesode: He assumed office in 1997 and served till 2001.
  • Prof. Abisogun Leigh: He served as the vice chancellor from 2001 to 2005.
  • Prof. Abdul Lateef A. Hussein: Prof. Abdul served as the VC of LASU from 2005 till 2011.
  • Prof. John Obafunwa: He was in office from 2011 to 2015.
  • Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun: He assumed office in 2016 and is still in office till date.

Admission Guide to the Lagos State University (LASU)

Generally, the admission process into LASU is very much straightforward. Although admission into Lagos State University could be quite competitive, candidates who meet the requirements for admission and have competitive scores in the examinations would have an advantage over other candidates. Meanwhile, the requirements for admission into LASU include:

  • Firstly, the candidate must possess at least 5 credits passes in SSCE (or its equivalent) in the relevant subjects for the intended course. Note that the certificate(s) to be used must be obtained from not more than two sittings.
  • Afterwards, the candidate is to register and sit for JAMB. In the course of the registration, the candidate should make LASU the first choice of institution. Also high score in JAMB examination would be a great advantage.

  • Then, the candidate should register for PUTME/screening through the university Portal.
  • Afterwards, the candidate should constantly check the admission status to view the admission progress.

How to Register for Lagos State University Screening?

To successfully enter the screening process into LASU, students have to ensure they follow the underlay guides:

    You will visit the LASU application portal and register yourself using your active email ID and telephone number. Thus, create your login details and obtain your password.

  2. Fill Personal Details

    After that, log in using your email address as the username and the password sent to the email address you used for creating login details.

  3. Upload Documents


    When you’ve successfully logged in, look to the left panel of your dashboard and do the following;
    Click on the button there to fill out the application form. Ensure you correctly fill in your details.
    When you are sure you are done filling out the form, click on the save button provided therein.
    Then, upload your passport photograph for identification according to the required format (JPG/PNG) and size.
    Hence, select your screening center and date.
    Note: You will obtain an application ID on the portal. You will be required to take it to the bank to make a payment for your application form. Students can go to the following banks to make payments. WEMA, Diamond, First Bank, GTB, or UBA bank to pay an application fee of 2,000 Naira only. When at the bank, just tell the teller that you want to pay for the Lagos State University application fee. They will charge you a service fee of #350. Summing up to 2,350 Naira as the application fee.

  4. Payment Review

    After you’ve made the payment, log back into the application portal and submit. Note that you cannot apply without making the bank payment.

  5. Print Form

Hostels in Lagos State University

Currently, Lagos State University (LASU) offers a variety of hostel accommodations across its Ojo and Epe campuses, providing students with safe and comfortable living environments that support both academic and personal development. In a significant development to enhance student accommodation, LASU, in collaboration with Advent Integrated Services Limited and other partners, completed a 1,128-bed Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) project. This initiative transformed LASU from a non-residential to a residential institution, addressing the student housing shortage and fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence.

Furthermore, the new hostel features modern amenities, including furnished rooms with en-suite bathrooms, study and common areas, a launderette, convenience stores, cafeterias, recreational spaces, and internet connectivity. Meanwhile, students interested in securing hostel accommodation are encouraged to apply through the official LASU Hostel Application Portal. The application process operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and early submission is advisable to increase the chances of securing a spot. New students can apply after receiving their admission offers, with a reserved quota of hostel spaces set aside for them.
