Overview of the Abia State Polytechnic

What used to be known as The Girls Technical College (GTC) along the Aba-Owerri road Aba is today Abia State Polytechnic. The section 8 of the 1994 Constitution made this come to reality. This institution is owned by the Abia State Government which in turn brings in revenue to the state. Furthermore, when talking about the history of Abia State Polytechnic, we cannot omit the likes of Dr. L. C. Oduniko who happens to be the founding rector of this prestigious institution. Also, Mr. E. S. Edeh who happens to be the first registrar of the institution, these two names have become part of the history of this noble institution.

In 1994/1995, the institution only had the license to offer certificates in National Diploma (ND), till the year 1999/2000 when they became eligible to offer both the National Diploma Certificate (ND) and the Higher National Diploma Certificate (HND). This is also attached with a one-year industrial training after the ND certificate acquisition before heading for the HND section.

Furthermore, various schools were established in this institution as it kept on developing over the years. They have the school of Industrial Technology which has its focus on training students on how to be smart and work in industries, handling industrial tools in a way that will make work more efficient. Therefore, the creation of this beautiful institution has helped in contributing to the development of Aba as a city especially the Aba-Owerri section in Aba city.

Management Body of the Abia State Polytechnic

Typically, every institute has its management body that oversees things, ensuring that each department carries out duties assigned to them so they can reach their set goals, which is to instill sound and quality knowledge in its students. Furthermore, Abia State Polytechnic has its own Management body with hierarchy of offices. Some of the offices in the highest level of management body are as follows;

#1. The Rector

This office is the top in the institution. Hence, all other offices take orders from the rector and report to it on cases that are above their pay grade, making it the most valuable office in the institution. Notably, the rector has a very critical scrutinizing routine in appointing who takes over the seat. This is because once the head of an organization is not representing perfectly or not at its top game, that organization is prone to failure. Meanwhile, the office is monitored by a sector to make sure that its power is not abused. Many fight tooth and nail to assume the post of the rector but the elite are chosen.

#2. The Deputy Rector

The office of the deputy rector is just like that of the vice president of an organization. He makes sure that everything is in order when the rector is not on sit. Thus, when the Rector is absent or not available for certain functions, the Deputy Rector fills in the gap which makes it job 100% available, cause they don’t know when duty will call.

Similarly, there are times when the Rector will have a demanding schedule, as a result, they will have to shift some of the workloads to the deputy to ease off some space to avoid breakdown. The office is always there to assist and make work easier for the Rector.

 #3. The Rector (Administration)

Typically, the institution has lots of Nonacademic sections and this office heads matters that concern them, from their day-to-day activities to when they are due for payment of salaries. This office has its job focused on mostly non-academic related issues that concern the non-academic staff, all their affairs, and needs.

Furthermore, the office is in charge of things like the computation of results and the admission unit. It makes sure that results are not tampered with and students who are through with their program with the institution can get their results computed and ready for the time they are to leave the institution.

Additionally, he make sure that the new intake is taken care of from the point where they write their aptitude test to the point where they are done with all the necessary clearance. Hence, the rector in this section heads all these duties and makes sure that nothing is done wrongly, but he also reports to the Rector in general and takes orders from him.

#4. The Rector (Academics)

Academics is one of the most paramount duties of the institution. Thus, it has an office that ensures that the duties that are supposed to be carried out in the academic sector by mainly the lecturers are being attended to. It makes sure that academics like lecturing and practicals are rendered to students and that they have a quality learning process. Furthermore, this office is in charge of the academic staff such as;

  • The Head of Departments
  • The course Adviser to students
  •  The lecturers

All these offices report to the academic Rector and take orders from him. Likewise, it make sure that Examinations and Continuous assessment tests are of the standard that they should be, with eyes wide open for examination malpractice which is always handled with the highest form of discipline.

#5. The Deputy Rector (Academics)

Like every other deputy office in the institution, this office helps the Academics Rectors to carry out duties and fills in for the Academics Rector on matters the rector is not available for.

#6. The Bursar

When we talk about the bursar in every institute, it is an office that oversees the billing of students and reconciliation of payments made by students ranging from tuition fees to other mandatory payments. Furthermore, the office of the Bursar creates a payment platform in a way that is more moderate and easygoing for the student.

A bursar ensures that all students’ accounts are brought down to a level of “paid off” status, indicating when a student still owes the institution, and when a student has cleared up its tuition and necessary payments. Meanwhile, this office does not necessarily work as the treasurer but can also fill in this position if needed.

Similarly, this office undergo serious scrutiny in choosing its workers to make sure that no foul play is encountered during the process of reconciliation of student accounts to avoid future cases that will or may lead to a bit of quagmire. Likewise, the office of the Bursar requires someone who has a good qualification in accountancy.

#7. The Registrar

This office is very important in the institution as it is responsible for drafting the yearly calendar, timetable, and also result computation. It makes sure that every result of each student recorded is carefully handled. Similarly, this office handles the recording of activities in and around the institution. Anyone from any part of the academic sector ranging from the lecturers up to the highest level can be selected to run this office.

#8. The Librarian

Normally, Librarians are the brain behind information. The office of the Librarian deals with the management of information. It makes sure that information is carefully arranged and available in the necessary places needed. Although, they are commonly be seen as people who handle matters concerning the Library, in a professional sense, it has more to do than just handling the library. There are certain skills required for librarians such as:

What’s your take on this? I urge you to use this same opportunity to share this information with others using Facebook, or Twitter buttons you see.
  • The ability to liaise with the school in helping students with research and projects.
  • Making sure that communication skills are at their peak for easy decimination of information.
  • Creating a platform to make sure that IT facilities that concern information acquisition are always maintained and developed. Though the office is not necessarily focused on the institution’s library, the office makes sure that the school library and bookshops are well-equipped and have a standard that meets the students’ and lecturers’ requirements. This includes research and drafting lecture notes on the variety of courses that the school offers.
